Friday Verm

Interesting day today on the Verm. The only play worth playing was Triple and Donut...the rest was blah. But then when I rounded the last bend to the take out I saw there was a young man standing by the old mill doing what I thought was "taking a pee". Whoops my mistake...as I floated queitly closer I saw he was ah.."relieving" himself a different way. Finally as I was staring at his bare butt I said "You better zip it up!" He jumped and stuffed it back in his pants. Of course the take out is right there so I had to land right where he was. He stood there watching me and it was very apparent that he hadn't finished what he was doing. I quickly emptied my boat and headed up the trail before he realised I was down there alone. When he did, he followed me up the path to the parking lot. I knew he was behind me but I wouldn't turn around to acknowledge him. He did say "hi" when he got up to the parking lot. My take is It could have been bad if he had realised sooner that I was alone...it may not be good if I run into him again. He walked off towards where ever so I know he's very local to the area. Oh well..cold weather is coming and then I don't see anyone down there.

Vermillion Week

Two days into a solid week of Verming. Feels sooo gooood to have water back in my local river! I promised I'd write a review of my All Star after I had put some time into it so here it is. I think I love just about everything about it. It has no problem running rivers or playing them. The outfitting is very comfortable! The balance for me is perfect. I couldn't be happier with it. It's been a good year as far as boats go. I picked up my Habitat this spring and it's proven to be a great boat and now I have the perfect playboat for me. All I need now is some North Shore Surf!!

Gunflint Trail 07

Tuesday I headed for the Gunflint Trail to join my friends, The Marroquins. I got to Grand Marias and figured everyone at camp would still be fishing so I headed to Paradise Beach to agate hunt. With a soft rain falling I walked the beach. Two hours later I had a huge stash of agates...some really good sized ones at that! I also picked up some Thompsonite...nice! I joined my friends at camp. Set up and grabbed my fishing pole and pulled in three good sized bass to add to the dinner table before the sun set on the first day. We fished everyday and feasted every night. I caught a nice sized walleye and lots of bass, but the fish of the week was caught by Shirley who pulled in the biggest bass I have seen! The young ones among us seemed to be catching the largest fish this week! Cooking tip: we used Leinie's Summer Shandy for beer batter one night. Lemon flavor worked subtley to flavor the fish. Great vacation!

Kadunce River Hike

Friday Melissa and I gave up fishing to hike the Kadunce river. We followed the trail until we came to the first falls and thought it was georgeous....little did we know there was much more to come. We then followed the creek bed until we came upon this cavern with a falls dropping into it. And it just kept getting better. We rejoined the trail and followed it to the Superior hiking trail bridge. In my mind I envisioned this being a great river to run but at just the right level. Nothing very high...just enough to ride the slides down.

Vermillion

Thanks to Nate, Paul and Tony for taking some great photos of me today. What a FUN day on the river!!!! I did two runs today. The level was rising rapidly thru the afternoon...it's gonna kill me to head north tomorrow. But hey..it'll be good when I get back. The weather has changed for the better!! Gone fishing!!!
